What fire alarm equipment includes
An alarm system has parts that sense a fire, parts that warn people, and one control unit that connects them. UTC lists nine of these parts in the catalogue.
| Part | What it does |
|---|---|
| Conventional panel | Control unit that shows which zone has a fire |
| Addressable panel | Control unit that shows the exact device that raised the alarm |
| Smoke detector | Senses smoke in the air |
| Heat detector | Senses a rise in temperature |
| Manual call point | A break-glass button that people press to raise the alarm |
| Sounder | A loud horn or bell that warns people |
| Sounder strobe | A sounder with a flashing light |
| Control module | Lets the control unit switch other equipment on or off |
| Monitor module | Lets the control unit read the status of other equipment |
Choosing a fire alarm panel
The fire alarm panel is the brain of the system. It receives the signal from every detector and call point, sounds the alarm and shows where the problem is. It also has a standby battery, so it keeps working when the power goes out in Karachi.
There are two kinds, and the choice depends on the size of your building.
Conventional panel
A conventional fire alarm panel divides the building into zones, for example one zone for each floor. Many detectors share one zone circuit. When one of them trips, the panel lights up that zone and you search the zone for the fire. This suits shops, clinics, small offices and small warehouses.
Addressable panel
An addressable fire alarm panel gives every detector and call point its own address. The panel tells you the exact device that raised the alarm, such as the store room on the second floor. The devices connect on a loop, which is a cable that runs through the building and back to the panel. Malls, hospitals, factories and tall buildings usually need an addressable fire alarm panel because finding the fire fast matters more. You can also add devices to the loop later, up to the limit of the loop.
How many zones or loops do you need?
Count your floors and separate areas. Send us a floor plan, or just the number of floors and rooms, and we will size the fire alarm panel with you. Your fire consultant or the building authority sets the final rules for your site.
Heat and smoke detectors
A smoke detector is the main detector for offices, shops and rooms where people sleep. See our smoke detector page for types and where to place them.
A heat detector reacts to temperature, not smoke. It suits kitchens, boiler rooms, generator rooms and dusty workshops, where steam or dust would set off a smoke detector by mistake. It trips at a set temperature (the fixed type) or when the temperature climbs fast (the rate of rise type). Heat is slower to build than smoke, so a heat detector does not replace a smoke detector in rooms where people sleep or work.
Manual call points, sounders and strobes
A manual call point is the red button on the wall that anyone can press to raise the alarm. It is one of the most searched parts, so it has its own manual call point page.
A sounder is the loud horn or bell. A sounder strobe adds a flashing light, which helps in noisy factories and for people who cannot hear well. Place sounders so the alarm is heard in every room, including behind closed doors.
Control and monitor modules
Modules connect an addressable system to other equipment.
A control module lets the panel switch something. For example, it can release a door lock or stop a fan when the alarm sounds. A monitor module lets the panel read the state of something, such as a sprinkler flow switch or a valve. If your building has sprinklers or fire doors, ask us which modules you need.
Why alarms matter in Karachi
Reports on the January 2026 Gul Plaza fire in Saddar say the building had no smoke alarms, and that most of its exits were locked. After that fire, Sindh ordered a fire safety audit of key buildings. The first checks cover fire alarm panels, portable extinguishers and emergency signs. If you manage a shop, office or factory, check that your alarm works and that someone tests it.

WhatsApp what you needFire alarm equipment questions
What is fire alarm equipment?
It is every part of an alarm system: the control unit, the detectors, the call points, the sounders and strobes, and the modules that link other equipment.
What is the difference between a conventional and an addressable system?
A conventional system tells you which zone has a fire. An addressable system tells you which device raised the alarm. Addressable gives faster answers and suits larger buildings.
Which fire alarm panel do I need?
Small buildings with a few rooms usually use a conventional one. Large or tall buildings use an addressable one. Tell us your building and we will advise.
Can I use a smoke detector in a kitchen?
Steam and cooking fumes often set off a smoke detector. A detector that reacts to temperature is usually used there instead. Ask us about your kitchen.
What are L1 to L5 and Type 3 fire alarms?
These are UK labels for how much of a building an alarm covers. We do not sell by those labels. Tell us your building and we will match the equipment to it.
How do I get a quote?
