An extinguisher that was used once, even for a few seconds, has lost pressure and part of its agent. It looks fine on the wall and fails on the second fire. Fire extinguisher refilling is the work that fixes that: the unit is emptied, checked, filled to weight, pressurised, sealed and tagged.

This page shows when a refill is due, what happens to the unit, what the tag should say, how to compare shops and what moves the price. The rules come from the NFPA 10 summaries listed at the end. Your insurer and authority decide which edition applies to you.

What does fire extinguisher refilling involve, step by step?

Six steps. The unit is emptied and opened, the parts are checked, the agent goes in by weight, the cylinder is pressurised and tested for leaks, and a new seal and tag go on. A trained person should do it, and the weight must land inside the maker's tolerance.

  1. Empty

Release the pressure and remove what is left of the agent.

  2. Inspect

Check the shell, valve, seals, hose and nozzle.

  3. Fill

Add new agent by weight, to the label.

  4. Pressurise

Bring the cylinder to its working pressure.

  5. Leak test

Check the valve and seals, then fit the nozzle or hose.

  6. Seal and tag

Fit a new pin and tamper seal and attach the tag.

The next sections cover which types, how often and what it costs.

Simplified from general guidance. Exact steps and limits follow the maker's manual for each model.

How often does an extinguisher need attention?

Four intervals matter. A monthly look, a yearly service, an internal exam every six years for stored-pressure dry chemical units, and a pressure test every 12 years for dry chemical cylinders. CO2, water and wet chemical cylinders are tested every five years. These are summaries of the code, so check the edition your insurer names.

Monthly

Visual check by staff

Yearly

Maintenance by a trained person

6 years

Internal service for stored-pressure dry chemical units

12 years

What is a hydrostatic test?

It fills the empty cylinder with water at high pressure to prove the shell can hold it. The date and the testing facility are stamped or labelled on the cylinder. A unit that fails is scrapped, not refilled.

What do the national provisions say?

The Building Code of Pakistan Fire Safety Provisions 2016 give existing buildings one year from notification to comply on extinguishers, alarm and detection, plans and drills (section 1.3.6.2.1 of the BCP Fire Safety Provisions 2016). They refer to NFPA 10 for upkeep. Which sections SBCA enforces on your plot is for SBCA to say.

How can I check my extinguisher myself each month?

In two minutes, with no tools. NFPA 10 asks for a monthly visual check that building staff can do, recorded by initialling and dating a tag on the unit. The table shows what to look at and what to do when it is wrong.

Look atWhat good looks likeIf it is wrong
GaugeNeedle in the green zoneNeedle in the red or low range means refill or replace. Do not shake it and hang it back.
Pin and tamper sealPin in place, seal unbrokenA broken seal means the unit may have been used. Have it checked.
Hose and nozzleNo cracks, no blockage, nozzle clearReplace the hose. A blocked nozzle will not discharge.
ShellNo dents, rust or leaksRust or a dent can mean a weak shell. Retire it after a check.
LabelReadable, with the make dateAn unreadable label means you cannot confirm type or age. Replace it.
WeightFeels full when liftedA light unit has lost agent. Refill it.
PlaceMounted, visible and unblockedMove it to the exit route and clear the stock in front of it.

Write the date and your initials on the tag each month. A page of dates is the first thing an inspector asks for.

What does refilling involve for each type of extinguisher?

It depends on what is inside. A powder unit takes new powder and pressure. A CO2 unit is checked by weight, since it has no gauge. The table shows the usual check for each type.

TypeWhat goes inHow it is checkedNotes
ABC or BC dry powderNew DCP powder and nitrogen or airWeight and gaugeAsk the plant which sizes it refills.
CO2Liquid CO2 by weightWeight of the CO2 cylinder against the labelAsk whether the plant fills CO2 itself. A hose replacement is quoted as its own item.
Clean agent (Halotron)Agent by weightWeight and gaugeNot every shop handles it.
Water and foamWater or foam concentrateGauge and levelSimple fill, but the shell and cap still need a check.
Wet chemical (kitchen)Agent by volumeGauge and levelUsed on cooking fat fires. Confirm the model before you order.

The table shows the usual checks, not what every shop stocks. Tell us the type and size on your label and we say if we can fill it.

What is the fire extinguisher refill price in Karachi?

A fire extinguisher refill price depends on the type, size and condition of the unit, and we do not publish a number we cannot back with a dated price list. We found no Karachi shop that posts refill rates with sizes and a date. Public Karachi tender requests ask bidders for rates and give none. So the honest answer is a short list of what moves the price, then a quote from your photo.

Why does the fire extinguisher refilling price differ between shops?

Mostly scope. One shop refills and fits a new tamper seal. Another also replaces the O-ring, hose and tag, checks the weight and leak tests the valve. A low price that leaves out the parts and the test is not the same job. Compare the lines, not the total.

Is refilling cheaper than buying a new extinguisher?

For most sound units, yes. If refill plus parts plus a pressure test costs more than half of a new unit, replacing can make more sense. For small units the gap is narrow. Send a photo and we tell you which is cheaper. See the extinguisher range for new units.

What can raise the cost?

A pressure test due, a damaged hose or valve, a rusted shell that fails inspection, a large number of units, an urgent deadline and travel to a site. Each is a line on the quote, so you can see it.

How do I choose where to get my extinguisher refilled?

Choose by what the shop shows you, not by the map pin. Most people search for a fire extinguisher refill near me and pick the closest result. A closer shop does not make a better refill. Ask what is done, who does it and what you get back.

How do I find fire extinguisher refill near me, and what should I check?

Search the map, then call or message with a photo of the label and gauge. A good shop answers with the type, whether it can refill that model and what it will check. Be careful of any shop that quotes without seeing the unit or the label.

Is the closest result for fire extinguisher refill near me the best choice?

Not by itself. Distance saves a trip, but it says nothing about the weighing, the parts or the tag. Rank shops by what they answer, then by distance. A shop ten minutes further that weighs every unit beats one next door that does not.

What should a good shop show you?

The agent it fills with, the scale it weighs on, the tamper seals and tags it fits and a stated turnaround. Ask to see the weighing and the leak test if the plant is on site. Our buying guide lists wider checks for any fire safety supplier.

Do you offer pickup and delivery?

Ask every shop, including us. The answer should state the areas, the charge and the time. We give it with the quote. Note that a quote with no terms for it leaves you carrying the cylinders.

What should be on the extinguisher after a refill?

Three things: a new seal, a tag and, if you need one, a record. They let the next person see what was done and when. A good collar or tag shows the refill month and year, the test pressure, the technician and the company.

What does a service tag show?

The date of the work, the company and the technician. A tag with no date, or one that is missing, means the history is unknown. Treat that unit as unchecked and ask for a service.

Do you get a refill certificate?

Ask. Some buyers, such as institutions and insurers, want a paper record for each unit. Say so before the job, with the serial numbers, so it can be written. We state what we issue on the quote.

What does the tamper seal tell you?

That the pin has not been pulled since the last service. A broken or missing seal means the unit may have been used. Replace the seal only after a check, never to hide a discharge.

Should I refill my extinguisher or replace it?

Refill it if the shell is sound, the label is readable and the unit is in test. Replace it if the shell is cracked, dented or rusted, the label is unreadable, the unit is a disposable type that has been used, or the cost of work is close to a new one.

What do I do with an expired extinguisher?

Stop relying on it. Check the make date and the test stamp on the cylinder. A disposable unit past 12 years is retired. A rechargeable one past its test date needs a test before it is refilled. We do not take back old units, so ask the shop that sold it or a refill plant what they accept.

When is a hose or valve change enough?

When the shell is sound and only a part is damaged. On a CO2 unit, the hose replacement is its own line on the quote. Parts show up on the quote as separate items.

Which places in Karachi need the most refills?

Places that use or abuse extinguishers, and places that hold many units. A kitchen discharges more often than an office. A factory holds more units than a shop. Plan the refill list by place, since each has different habits.

PlaceWhat it usually keepsWhat to plan
Shop or officeOne or two powder unitsA monthly look, a yearly service, and a refill after any use.
Restaurant or kitchenWet chemical or CO2 near the fryer, powder at the exitRefill right after a flare-up, and check the kitchen unit more often.
Factory or workshopMany powder and CO2 units, sometimes trolley unitsA fleet list, a yearly round and a spare set for rotation.
Server or electrical roomCO2 unitsWeigh each unit at the yearly service.
Vehicles and generatorsSmall powder unitsHeat and vibration age them, so check the gauge more often.

These are common patterns, not a rule for your building. A fire safety audit or your consultant sets the actual list.

How do I get my extinguishers refilled by UTC?

In six steps. A single unit can be quoted from a photo. A fleet of units is quoted from a list.

We give a written turnaround with the quote. Tell us if you have a deadline.

Bring the unit to our shop at Shams Chamber on Shahrah-e-Liaquat, opposite the DIGP investigation office, if you prefer to hand it over in person.

  1. Send a photo of the label, the gauge and the tag, and the number of units.
  2. We tell you if the type can be refilled and what else the unit needs.
  3. We send a quote with each line: agent, parts, test and tag.
  4. You approve and send or bring the unit.
  5. We empty, check, refill, pressurise, leak test, seal and tag it.
  6. You collect it, or we arrange return if you have asked for it.

What should you ask any refill shop?

Eight questions that sort a proper refill from a quick top-up.

If a shop cannot answer these, treat the price as a guess. For wider checks on any fire safety supplier, read the buying guide.

  • Can you refill this type and size, and which agent do you use?
  • Do you weigh each unit before and after?
  • Do you replace the O-ring, seal and pin, and what is included in the price?
  • Do you leak test the valve?
  • What tag or collar do you fit, and what does it show?
  • Do you test the cylinder if the interval is due, and what does that cost?
  • How long does it take, and is there an urgent option and charge?
  • Do you have a way to return the unit, and what are the terms?

Send a photo of the label and gauge. We reply with what the unit needs and a quote.

Fire extinguisher refilling questions

Short answers. If yours is not here, ask us.

Ask on WhatsApp

How long does fire extinguisher refilling take?

It depends on the type, the number of units and whether a pressure test is due. We give a written turnaround with the quote.

Can a used extinguisher be refilled?

Yes, if it is rechargeable and the shell and parts pass inspection. NFPA 10 asks for a refill after any use.

Can I refill an extinguisher at home?

No. The agent must be weighed, the pressure set and the unit sealed and tagged by a trained person. A home top-up leaves no record and can leave the unit unsafe.

How do I know a refill was done properly?

Check the tag for a date, company and technician, look for a new tamper seal, and compare the weight to the label. Ask for the weight if you have a scale.

Can fire blankets or fire balls be refilled?

No. They are single-use devices. Replace them after use. See the extinguisher range for what we stock.

Which extinguisher suits my kitchen or office?

It depends on what could burn. Our extinguisher guide matches the type to the risk.

What if my extinguisher is very old?

Check the make date and the test stamp. A disposable unit over 12 years is retired. Send us the label and we say whether to refill or replace.

Is the fire extinguisher refilling price lower for many units?

We quote fleets by the list, so the price reflects the count. Send the list.

Do I need to tell the authorities after a refill?

Keep the tag and records for your insurer, your landlord and any inspection. For NOC steps, see the fire NOC guide.

How this page was built

United Trading Company prepared it in October 2026 from public documents and published summaries of NFPA 10. Exact limits for your model are in the maker's manual, and the edition named by your insurer rules.

We do not certify compliance or issue NOCs. The authorities decide those. None of the examples is a UTC job.
