What is a smoke detector used for?
It notices smoke in the air and raises a signal. In a home it is usually a battery alarm that sounds on its own. In an office, shop or factory it is often a detector wired to a fire alarm panel, which sounds the sirens for the whole building. Either way, it buys you time to get out.
How does a smoke detector work?
Inside, a small chamber draws in air and checks it for smoke particles. When the reading passes a set level, the unit sounds or signals the panel. NIST explains the two common methods: how alarms detect particles.
- Photoelectric (optical): a photoelectric sensor smoke detector holds a light beam in its chamber. Smoke bends the light, and a sensor sees it.
- Ionisation: smoke changes a small electric current between two plates, and the unit reacts.
What are the smoke detector types?
The types differ by how they sense and where they fit. Ask us which models are on the shelf today.
| Type | How it senses | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Photoelectric smoke detector | Light scattered by smoke | Bedrooms, offices, corridors, rooms with slow smouldering fires from wiring, cloth or paper |
| Ionization smoke detector | Change in electric current | Rooms where flames spread fast |
| Optical smoke detector | Same method as photoelectric | Panel systems in offices and shops |
| Combined smoke and heat detector | Smoke and temperature together | Rooms where smoke alone gives false alarms |
| Multi sensor detector | Several sensors read together | Mixed spaces such as a kitchen next to a lounge |
| Beam smoke detector | Light beam across a long space | Warehouses and tall halls |
Which is better, photoelectric or ionisation?
For most Karachi homes and shops we suggest photoelectric. It reacts well to slow smouldering fires, and cooking steam sets it off less easily. Choose a photoelectric smoke detector for bedrooms and offices, and ask us before you pick ionisation.
What is the difference between conventional and addressable?
A conventional smoke detector connects to the panel in zones. The panel tells you which zone has smoke, such as the first floor. An addressable smoke detector has its own address on a loop, so the panel names the exact unit. Small buildings usually need conventional. Large or multi-floor buildings gain from addressable. See the fire alarm panel guide.
What is the difference between a smoke alarm, a detector and a fire detector?
An alarm holds the sensor and the siren in one box. A fire detector only senses, and a panel or sounder makes the noise. Many sellers use both words for the same battery unit, so say what you want: standalone, or connected to a panel.
A fire alarm smoke detector sits on a base on the ceiling and connects by cable to the panel. Some shops list it as a smoke and fire detector or a fire smoke detector. It is the same part. The smoke detector base is sold with it or on its own, so ask which you are getting.
Which power type should you choose?
Smoke alarm price in Pakistan depends partly on the power type, so decide this first.
| Power type | What to know | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Battery smoke detector | Fits with screws, no wiring. You change the battery | Flats, shops, rented rooms |
| Battery operated smoke alarm | A 9V battery and a test button | Small rooms and stores |
| 10 year smoke alarm | Sealed battery. You replace the whole unit at the end of life | Places where nobody checks batteries |
| Mains with backup | Wired to supply, needs an electrician | New builds |
| Wireless smoke detector | Units link to each other, so one sounds all | Homes with several floors |
| WiFi smoke detector | Sends a message to a phone | Owners who travel |
| Panel detector | Powered through the panel cable | Offices, factories, plazas |
Pick a battery smoke detector if you cannot run wires. Pick a battery operated smoke alarm for a single store room. Ask for the battery type and life per model. A 10 year smoke detector should say so on its data sheet.
Where should you fit one?
NFPA says to fit alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level. See NFPA advice on alarms. Fit them on the ceiling, away from corners.
| Place | What to do |
|---|---|
| Smoke detector for home | One in each bedroom and one in the passage outside |
| Smoke detector for office | One per room, plus corridors, linked to a panel |
| Smoke detector for kitchen | Not above the stove. Use a heat detector or a combined unit |
| Smoke detector for warehouse | Use panel detectors or a beam type for high ceilings |
Why does it beep or go off when you cook?
A chirp every minute or so usually means a low battery. Cooking steam can also set off an alarm placed too close to the kitchen. Move it away, or fit a heat detector in the kitchen itself. We will cover these in separate guides on false alarms, chirping and heat detectors.
For care, press the test button every month. Use smoke detector test spray to check the smoke detector sensor. Smoke detector battery replacement is the first fix for a chirp. Smoke detector replacement is needed when the unit reaches the end of its life. A smoke sensor that has gone dusty can also give false alarms.
How do you choose one?
Send us the answers on WhatsApp and we will reply with what fits and a quote.
- Tell us the room and the ceiling height.
- Say if you want a standalone alarm or a detector for a panel.
- Pick the power type from the table above.
- Ask for the model, the origin and the data sheet. Origin is China for many models, so we confirm it per model.
- Ask for the smoke detector price for one unit and for the full order.
What does it cost in Karachi?
Smoke detector price in Pakistan changes with the type, the brand and the power. Smoke detector price in Karachi also depends on how many units you need and whether they connect to a panel. We do not print prices on the site because they move. Call 0313 2291500 for today's smoke alarm price in Pakistan, quoted for your order. Smoke alarm price in Pakistan follows the same rules.
What should Karachi buyers check?
Heat matters here. Karachi's hottest month, May, averages a daily high of 35.5 C (Climate of Karachi). One battery alarm data sheet we saw lists 4 to 38 C as its operating range, so ask us for the range of the model you want.
After the Gul Plaza fire, reported to have had no working smoke alarms, many owners now ask for checks. Sindh ordered building audits in 2026, and alarm panels are on the checklist.
A detector warns you. For heat inside a DB box, the Fire Breaker device acts on the spot.

WhatsApp what you needFrequently asked questions
How many do I need?
One in each bedroom, one outside the sleeping area and one on each floor. A shop needs coverage in every room and the storage area.
Do I need a fire alarm panel?
A single room can use a standalone alarm. A shop, office or plaza with many rooms should use detectors connected to a panel, so one alarm covers the whole building.
How often should I test it?
Press the test button once a month. Replace the battery when it chirps, or replace the unit at the end of its life.
Can dust or steam set it off?
Yes. Heavy dust and steam can set off a smoke detector sensor. Clean it gently, and ask us about a different sensor if the room is dusty.
How long does one last?
It depends on the model. A 10 year unit says so on the box. Ask us for the life and warranty of the model you pick.
Do you deliver in Karachi?
Yes, all over Karachi. We agree the delivery charge on call or WhatsApp. Smoke detector price in Karachi is quoted with it, and smoke detector price in Pakistan terms are the same for each unit.
How do I get a quote?
Call or WhatsApp 0313 2291500 with the room type and the number of units. Ask for the smoke alarm price in Pakistan and the smoke detector price in Pakistan side by side. You can also visit the shop at Shams Chamber, Seari Quarters.
