What does PPE stand for, and what counts as PPE?

PPE stands for personal protective equipment, also called personal protective gear or personal safety equipment. It means any item a person wears or carries to protect the body from a hazard at work: head, eyes, ears, lungs, hands, feet, skin or a fall from height. Hazards are removed first. PPE covers what is left.

That last line matters. A guard on a grinder, a ventilation fan or a quieter machine always comes before a pair of earmuffs. PPE is what stands between the worker and the risk that could not be removed.

It also helps to know what is not PPE. A smoke detector protects a building, not a person. A fire blanket and an extinguisher put out a fire, and they sit with our fire range. A firefighter suit is PPE, because someone wears it into the heat. Where a product sits decides which page it lives on, and this one covers only what a person puts on.

What is the difference between PPE and safety equipment?

PPE is the part of safety equipment that a person wears or carries on their body, such as a helmet, glove or harness. Safety equipment is the wider group, and it also includes things that protect a place: fire extinguishers, alarms, signs, guards and first aid boxes. Every item of PPE is safety equipment, but not the other way round.

So a site usually needs both. The helmet and shoes go on the worker, and the extinguisher and the exit sign stay on the wall. UTC supplies both sides, which is why the fire range sits at the end of this page.

Which PPE do you need for each hazard?

Match the hazard to the item, not the other way round. A falling object needs a helmet and toe protection, flying sparks need eye and face cover, and a long fall needs a full body harness with a lanyard. The table below pairs each hazard with the UTC items that guard against it.

HazardWhat to wearUTC items
Falling objectsHead and toe protectionSafety helmet, steel toe shoes
Flying particles and splashesEye and face coverSafety goggles, safety glasses, face shield
Dust, fumes and particlesMask or respiratorDust mask, half face respirator with filters and cartridges
NoiseEar protectionEarplugs, earmuffs
Cuts, chemicals and handlingGloves chosen for the riskCut resistant, chemical resistant, leather working, disposable nitrile
Electrical workInsulating gloves, anti static shoesElectrical insulating gloves, anti static shoes
Heat and sparksWelding and flame resistant gearWelding gloves, welding helmet, flame resistant coverall
Working at heightFall arrestFull body harness, double lanyard with shock absorber
Low visibilityHigh visibility clothingReflective vest
Wet floors and mudWaterproof footwearGumboots

One item rarely does two jobs. A leather glove that suits a loading dock will not stop a chemical splash, and a dust mask is not a respirator for fumes. When a job has two hazards, you wear two items.

Personal protective equipment from head to toe: the UTC range

Our personal protective equipment range is built around nine families. These are the 29 items on our list today.

  • Safety shoes: safety shoes, steel toe shoes, anti static shoes, gumboots.
  • Gloves: safety gloves, cut resistant gloves, chemical resistant gloves, electrical insulating gloves, welding gloves, disposable nitrile gloves, leather working gloves.
  • Helmets: safety helmet.
  • Eye and face: safety goggles, safety glasses, face shield, welding goggles.
  • Respiratory: dust mask, half face respirator, filters and cartridges.
  • Hearing: earplugs, earmuffs.
  • Clothing: reflective vest, coverall, flame resistant coverall, chemical protective suit, firefighter suit.
  • Fall protection: full body harness, double lanyard with shock absorber.
  • Welding: welding helmet.

Prices are not printed on the site. As safety equipment suppliers we quote per order: message us the item and the quantity on WhatsApp and we send the rate.

PPE for welding, electrical, chemical, construction and factory work

Different jobs stack different hazards, so each job needs its own set. The blocks below list the hazards first and the items second. They are a starting point for a site check, not a fixed kit, and a supervisor who knows the work should confirm the final list.

Welding

Arc light, sparks and hot metal. Start with a welding helmet or welding goggles, welding gloves and a flame resistant coverall, then add steel toe shoes. A dust mask is not enough for welding fumes, so ask us about a half face respirator with the right filter.

Electrical work

Live parts and static. Electrical insulating gloves, anti static shoes and a safety helmet are the core set. Insulating gloves carry a class and a test marking, so ask for the datasheet before you buy.

Chemical handling

Splashes and vapour. Chemical resistant gloves, safety goggles or a face shield, a chemical protective suit and gumboots. The glove material has to match the chemical, so name the chemical when you message us.

Construction

Falling objects, dust, noise and height. Safety helmet, steel toe shoes, reflective vest, earplugs or earmuffs, a dust mask, and a full body harness with a double lanyard for any work above ground.

Factory floor

Moving parts, noise, cuts and oil. Cut resistant or leather working gloves, safety glasses, earmuffs and anti static or steel toe shoes. Factories in SITE, Korangi, Landhi, North Karachi, Federal B Area and Port Qasim run very different processes, so list the hazards per section, not per factory, and order safety equipment supplies against that list.

How do you choose PPE that actually protects?

You choose PPE in five steps: check the hazard, pick the type of item, check the marking, get the size and fit right, and check it works with the rest of your gear. A helmet that does not fit and a mask that leaks both protect less than their label promises.

Who wears the item decides whether it works. Gear that is too hot, too tight or too clumsy ends up in a drawer, so fit one person and ask how it feels after an hour of work before you order for a crew.

How do you choose between safety equipment suppliers in Karachi?

Choose a safety equipment supplier that gives you the model, the marking and the sizes in writing before you pay. Ask for the datasheet of the exact item, ask what is in stock and what is ordered on request, and ask who you speak to if something does not fit.

Among safety equipment suppliers in Karachi, many listings show a product card with a WhatsApp button and nothing else: no marking, no size range, no price. That is a catalogue, not an answer. At UTC you can visit Shop no 1 in Shams Chamber, hold the item, and message us on 0313 2291500 with questions. Where we do not know a detail, we say so and check with the supplier before we quote.

  1. Check the hazard first. Walk the task, not just the site, and write down what can hurt the worker: falling tools, sparks, dust, noise, a chemical, a drop. The same site can have a different hazard in each section.
  2. Pick the type. Use the table above to move from hazard to item.
  3. Check the marking. A real product carries a standard on the item or its datasheet. The next section lists the ones to look for.
  4. Get the size and fit right. A shoe that pinches gets taken off. A harness that hangs loose does not catch a fall properly. Ask for the size range before you order for a team.
  5. Check it works with other gear. Safety glasses must seal with a respirator, and a helmet must leave room for earmuffs. Test the full set on one worker first.

Standards and markings to look for on each item

Look for the standard that matches the item: EN ISO 20345 on safety shoes, EN 388 on gloves, EN 166 on eye protection, EN 352 on hearing protection, EN 149 on dust masks, EN ISO 20471 on high visibility clothing, EN 361 on harnesses and EN 397 on helmets. These marks are how you compare two items fairly.

ItemMarking to ask forWhat it tells you
Safety shoesEN ISO 20345Toe protection tested for impact. Codes such as S1 and S3 add sole and water features
GlovesEN 388Mechanical risks: abrasion, cut, tear and puncture
Eye protectionEN 166General requirements for glasses and goggles, including impact
Hearing protectionEN 352Requirements for earmuffs and earplugs
Dust masksEN 149Filtering half masks, graded by how much dust they stop
High visibility clothingEN ISO 20471Colour and reflective area for visibility
HarnessEN 361Full body harness for fall arrest
HelmetEN 397Industrial safety helmet

A marking on a box is a claim, and the datasheet is the proof. Ask us for the marking of the exact model you want before you order, and we will tell you plainly what the paperwork for that model shows.

Does Sindh law require employers to provide PPE?

Yes. The Sindh Occupational Safety and Health Act 2017 requires an employer to provide protective clothing and equipment where a hazard cannot be removed another way, and it requires workers to use what they are given. This page states only that general duty. Read the Act itself, or ask a safety professional, for the exact obligations on your site.

The Act does not turn this into a shopping list. It leaves the choice of item to the hazard, which is why the hazard table above comes first. Whether you run a workshop in Korangi or a godown in SITE, the practical steps are the same: find the hazard, remove what you can, and give each worker the item that covers the rest.

How do you order PPE from UTC?

You order PPE from UTC by sending the item, the quantity and the sizes on WhatsApp or the quote form, then collecting from the shop at Seari Quarters or having it delivered. We answer with the item, a rate and what is in stock. We deliver all over Karachi, and the charge is agreed on a call or WhatsApp before we send anything.

To make the quote fast, include the job, the hazards, the number of workers and any marking your company or client requires. Prefer a form? Use the quote form. It is the last step, not the first, because a call gets an answer faster.

  1. Tell us the item and the job. Name the item from the range above, or describe the hazard and we suggest one.
  2. Send quantity and sizes. Shoe sizes, glove sizes and how many of each.
  3. Add a photo if it helps. A photo of the work area or the old item on WhatsApp saves a round of questions.
  4. Get your quote. We reply on WhatsApp or through the quote form.
  5. Collect or receive. Collect from Shop no 1, Shams Chamber, Shahrah-e-Liaquat, opposite the DIGP investigation office, Seari Quarters, or ask us to deliver. We deliver all over Karachi, and we agree the charge before we send anything.

PPE protects the worker. Fire equipment protects the place. A site that buys helmets and gloves usually also needs the fire side covered, and the same shop supplies both. In Karachi the fire side is not a small matter: The News reported about 2,400 fire incidents in the city in 2025.

What does PPE stand for?

PPE stands for personal protective equipment. It covers the items a person wears to guard the body from a workplace hazard: helmets, shoes, gloves, eye and face protection, masks, ear protection, harnesses and protective clothing. UTC supplies 29 such items from Shop no 1, Shams Chamber, Seari Quarters.

What are the types of PPE, with examples?

The main types of PPE are head, eye and face, hearing, respiratory, hand, foot, body and fall protection. Examples are a safety helmet, goggles, earmuffs, a half face respirator, cut resistant gloves, steel toe shoes, a coverall and a full body harness. UTC groups its range into nine families, listed above.

What is PPE used for?

PPE is used to reduce the injury a hazard can cause when the hazard cannot be removed. A helmet softens a falling object, goggles stop flying chips, earmuffs cut noise and a harness catches a fall. PPE does not remove the hazard, so it works best after guards, ventilation and safe work methods are in place.

What is in a PPE kit for a factory or site?

A PPE kit depends on the hazards, so no single list fits every site. A basic set usually has a safety helmet, safety shoes, safety glasses, gloves and a reflective vest. Welding adds a welding helmet and gloves, chemical work adds a protective suit and resistant gloves, and work at height adds a full body harness.

Do you give PPE prices in Pakistan?

UTC does not print PPE prices on the site. Send the item, quantity and size on WhatsApp to 0313 2291500 and we reply with a rate. The price changes with the brand, the rating of the item and how many you buy, so a bulk order for a factory is quoted differently from a single pair.

Which safety shoes marking do I need, S1 or S3?

Pick S1 for dry indoor work where you need toe protection and an anti static sole. Pick S3 for sites with water, mud or sharp objects underfoot, because S3 adds water resistance and a sole that resists penetration. Both sit under EN ISO 20345. Tell us the surface and we match the code.

How do I know the PPE is genuine?

Check three things before you pay: the model name on the item, the standard marking on the item or its datasheet, and whether the seller can show that paper. A marking on a box proves nothing alone. UTC states a marking only for models whose documents it holds, and says so when it does not.

Is a hard hat the same as a bump cap?

A hard hat, also called a safety helmet, protects against falling objects. A bump cap only protects against knocks, such as hitting your head on a low pipe. They are not interchangeable. UTC stocks the safety helmet and does not carry a bump cap in its range today.

Can I buy PPE in bulk for a factory?

Yes. Send the list of items, the quantity and the sizes for each worker, and we quote the whole order together. Ask for the datasheet of every item before you approve it for a crew. We confirm any quantity terms with the quote, not before it.

Does UTC deliver PPE in Karachi?

Yes. UTC delivers all over Karachi. The charge depends on your area and the order size, and we agree it on a call or WhatsApp before we send anything. You can also collect from Shop no 1, Shams Chamber, Shahrah-e-Liaquat, opposite the DIGP investigation office, Seari Quarters.

Do you supply firefighter PPE and SCBA?

Yes. UTC lists a firefighter suit in its clothing range, and SCBA sets and an aluminized heat reflective suit sit in our fire safety catalogue. We state a certification only for the model whose documents we hold, so ask us for the paperwork on the exact set before you buy.
