What is a fire hose reel, and how is it different from a fire hose?
A hose reel is a drum of small-bore hose fixed to a wall and fed from the building's water supply, made for one person to run out in the first minutes of a fire. The other product is the plain hose, canvas or double jacket in 1.5 or 2.5 inch, that hydrant cabinets and firefighters use. Some sellers call it a fire hose pipe.
Karachi buyers search for both and often need only one. Pick the reel for staff in a corridor or shop, and the plain hose for a hydrant point or a fire team.
How does a hose reel work?
Water from the building's line fills the hose when the valve opens, and use takes five steps. On an automatic fire hose reel the water starts as you pull the hose, and on a manual one you open the valve first, so ask which kind the model uses.
- Open the valve at the drum, or pull the hose if the reel is automatic.
- Unwind all of the hose before you open the nozzle.
- Keep your escape route behind you.
- Aim at the base of the flames and open the nozzle.
- Close the valve, drain and dry the hose, and wind it back.

What is a cabinet fire hose?
It is a 1 inch reel or a folded hose kept in a lockable case so it stays clean, visible and ready. Buyers also ask for a fire hose cabinet or a fire cabinet hose. One Karachi listing shows a 1 inch fire hose reel, and buyers also search for a 19mm fire hose reel or a 25mm hose reel. That listing rates a 1 inch fire hose of 30 m at 8 bar, while another Pakistani seller gives 12 bar for its reels, so the bar figure on the label tells them apart. A 30m fire hose reel, also searched as a 30 meter hose reel, is the length buyers ask about most.
Fire hose size is the bore, fire hose length is the piece you pull out, and fire hose diameter must match your hydrant coupling. Listings show a 1.5 inch fire hose, a 2 inch fire hose and a 2.5 inch fire hose.

Gul Plaza on Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road, Saddar, caught fire about 10 pm on 17 January 2026, and firefighters needed nearly 36 hours to bring it under control on 19 January. Reports say at least 80 people died and that the building had no sprinklers, hoses or extinguishers. A Sub-Fire Officer said on 21 January 2026 that an extinguisher in the first shop could have stopped the fire at its origin.
A reel would not have put out a 36 hour fire. Its job is the first few minutes.
What does a fire hose reel not do?
A reel puts water on a small fire and nothing more. Imperial College London's fire guidance says a water extinguisher on live electrical equipment can electrocute the user, and the same goes for a reel.
- Electrical fire: Switch off the power first, then use CO2 or dry powder. See fire extinguishers.
- Cooking oil pan: A fire blanket suits a kitchen pan fire better than water. See fire blankets.

- A large fire: Leave, shut the door behind you and call Rescue 1122.
